Chapter 2 - Friday Night

Kali had an absolutely wonderful day at school!  She had no trouble finding all of her classes, the teachers all seemed welcoming and she even was invited to sit with a couple of people during lunchtime!  She left the school grounds with an air of confidence, believing that very soon she would be all settled in at Buckingham High and making friends.

She brought back a pile of homework that was due on Monday, but since she had all weekend to work on it, she thought it would be fine to put it off until later.  Setting her backpack down in the bedroom, Kali pondered how she should spend her Friday evening.  She could putter around the cottage, maybe go for a walk near the surf, finish reading "Lucas Dark and The Increasingly Unlikely Series of Coincidences," or she could head out in search of something fun to do, and maybe grab a bite to eat while she was out.  She remembered hearing some of the kids talking about a bowling ally in Newcrest that sometimes ran Friday drink specials, so she called a taxi service and headed to Southport Industrial Bowl.

Kali strode through the double doors of Southport Industrial Bowl and knew she'd have fun!  There were bowling lanes of course, a karaoke machine set up, a bar serving free chips, lots of seating, and she was pretty sure that she recognized a couple girls from her school!  She had just grabbed a free bowl of chips and sat down to watch someone singing on the karaoke machine when an energetic voice came through the loudspeakers.
"Iiiiit's Happy Hour here at Southport Industrial Bowl folks!  For the next 60 minutes enjoy drinks at a discounted price!  So make sure you stop by the bar, say say hi to Peter Benoit, our Mixologist on duty tonight and grab a drink...or two!  Have a great evening and happy bowling!"
Yep, thought Kali, tonight was going to be fun!
Moonlight Bowling Mode
After finishing her chips and washing up in the restroom, she paid for one 10-frame game of bowling.  They had JUST switched to a Moonlight Mode, and so the lanes were all lit up in bright colors!  Truth be told, the last time Kali had been bowling, she had been five...and there had been bumper guards and bowling helpers involved.  She laced up her red, white and blue rental shoes and grabbed a plain black ball from the rack, heading to the lane the attendant had pointed out to her.
"Here goes nothing." Kali muttered under her breath, and threw her first ball....behind her!
With a very embarrassed look around her, she quickly picked up her ball again and gave it a hearty toss down the lane.  The other bowlers had been so wrapped up in their games, that Kali was pretty sure nobody had seen her mistake, thank goodness!
"Iiiiit's Ladies Night here at Southport Industrial Bowl folks!  From now until closing, ladies get discounts on all drinks at the bar, snacks and on bowling games!  Have a great night and happy bowling!" boomed the energetic voice through the loudspeakers.
Too bad Kali had already paid for her game earlier, she could have saved a few Simoleons!  Thankfully the rest of Kali's bowling game went pretty well, she even got a strike!  Her ending score was an 81, not THAT bad for her first real attempt at bowling!

When things started quieting down and some of the teens started heading home for the night, Kali thought it was probably time to leave as well.  She called for a taxi, grabbed another bowl of free chips from the bar and sat down to watch a bowling league finish up their last few frames.  Kali couldn't believe how sore her right arm was just from playing that 10-frame game, and was quite looking forward to a nice hot soak in the shower once she got home.

It was well past midnight before Kali was showered and ready for bed.  She switched off her phone alarm since tomorrow was Saturday, laid down and pulled the covers up to her chin.  It wasn't long before Kali was drifting off to her first peaceful sleep in over a week.
